Coach of Asante Kotoko Charles Kwablan Akunnor has admitted that he needs to sharpen his midfield department in order to ensure further progression in the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Porcupine Warriors [Asante Kotoko] sealed qualification to the next stage of the competition last Saturday at the expense of Kariobanji Sharks having beaten the delightful Kenyan side 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi but the coach believes there’s work to be done in the midfield going forward.

“We struggled a bit and were not compact enough in the midfield,” he noted.

“It’s a problem that we need to work on. If we are able to strengthen the team from within and improve the way we play from the middle, I think it will solve a lot of problems for us,” he adds.

The former captain of the Black Stars [C.K Akunnor] also admitted Kariobanji Sharks were on top of issues:

“We were not too exciting today, I must admit. The opponent [Kariobanji Sharks] really did well.”

Coach Akunnor, however, praised second half substitute [Umar Bashiru] who came on to solidify the midfield for Kotoko.

“Thank God we have somebody like Umar. Anytime he comes in, he is able to stabilize things for us and I think we need that stability. Whether he will start or not, there is a competition.

“Umar Bashiru gave us the stability we needed when he came in. We were leading at that time and so the idea was to contain the pressure and if the opportunity comes for us to score, we score.”
