The Super Eagles [Nigeria] pipped numerically disadvantaged Squirrels of Benin 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations on Thursday, September 21.
Experienced attacking midfielder Rabiu Ali scored the only goal of the game in the 10th minute when Nigeria broke away on a great counter-attacking move splitting just three passes from the defence to the attacking end.
The Squirrels were reduced to ten men in the 35th minute when the hard working Marcellin Koukpo visited the pocket of the referee for the second time in the game.
With a man down, the Squirrels led by the nimble footed Gomez created lots of problems for the Nigerian defensive line except that they could not find the back of the net before the break.
Jules Elegbede nearly pulled parity for Benin in the 53rd minute but his final touch was not good enough to cause a problem for Nigerian goalkeeper Ezenwa.
Whilst the Beninese kept knocking at goal, it was the Super Eagles rather that came close to scoring on several occasions in the second half, but Peter Moses, Afeez Aremu, and Emmanuel Okpotu could all not find the back of the net as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria.
The Super Eagles will face Ghana in the final match of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations on Sunday, September 24 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.
