Sloane Stephens journeyed to her first U.S. Open quarterfinal after taking a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 fourth-round win over 30th seed Julia Goerges of Germany on Sunday.

“Today was a tough match obviously playing in fourth round of Grand Slam is always difficult,” Stephens said to the crowd. “All week I’ve been giving her restaurant recommendations. Now I think she’s going to make me take her to dinner.”

Stephens is currently is ranked 83rd but is playing at the Open with a protected ranking of No. 26. Stephens suffered a right foot injury, which resulted in surgery, and hadn’t played on tour between the 2016 Olympics in Rio until Wimbledon this June.

“When I first came back at Wimbledon I was super nervous it wasn’t going to come my way,” Stephens said. “I obviously couldn’t ask for a better comeback. I couldn’t be happier.”

Stephens has now won 12 of her last 14 matches played. She reached back-to-back semifinals at Toronto and Cincinnati this summer. She withdrew from the New Haven tournament the week before the U.S. Open because of a wrist injury.

Her best result at a Grand Slam remains her surprising semifinal run at the 2013 Australian Open. She upset Serena Williams in the quarterfinals there before falling to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Stephens now leads Goerges 5-1 in career meetings and just defeated her good friend in the recent Cincinnati quarterfinals 6-1, 7-6 (3). She will play Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the quarterfinals.
