Australia’s high hopes of winning gold in the men’s rugby competition in the upcoming Commonwealth Games has been dealt a major blow as captain James Stannard has been ruled out of the Gold Coast 2018 due to a reported fractured skull.

According to report James Stannard, 35, got punched in Sydney’s eastern suburbs by a man outside a kebab shop in Coogee at around 3:10am on Friday, March 30.

The culprit believed to be a British national was arrested as he tried to flee.

Stannard was at a farewell dinner for departing coach Andy Friend with teammates – Lewis Holland and Ben O’Donnell.

The Bristish will be granted a strict conditional bail to appear at Waverley Court on April 19, 2018.

Meanwhile Stannard, who featured for Australia at the Rio 2016 Olympics is responding to treatment at the St. Vincent’s Hospital.
