Africa’s fastest man – Ferdinand Omanyala Omurwa set the Alexander Stadium agog on Wednesday having clocked 10.02 seconds to win the men’s 100m final from defending Commonwealth Games champion – Akani Simbine.
The chemistry student from the University of Nairobi [Omanyala] who had to battle with visa issues prior to the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon sped into the lead after 45m ahead of his closest rivals – Akani Simbine, Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon, Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati and held his position to the finish line as the crowd cheered him on.
Meanwhile, English star Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake picked up a seeming hamstring injury in the course of the race but carried it through, finishing in last with a time of 11.10 seconds.
