Teofimo Lopez backed his trash talks with a sterling performance as he boxed excellently to outclass hard working Vasiliy Lomachenko to win undoubtedly the biggest fight of 2020 by unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The 23-year-old boxing skill factory bounced off right from the first second second as he jabbed and threw few punches around without connecting to the body of Loma who was just studying the ship.
Lopez [16-0, 12 KOs] raised his game and began to connect in round two, as he cracked Lomachenko with more body shots.
The takeover [Lopez] was all over Lomachenko in round six, driving Lomachenko back with a 1-2. Lomachenko responded appropriately, but a two sharp right hands by Lopez connected at the bell.
As predicted of him, Lomachenko came into the picture after the sixth round as he stepped forward to outbox the man considered one of the most intelligent boxers in the game.
Lomachenko, 32, sensing danger got off his trunks in rounds seven and eight but the stubborn Lopez stood resolute as he fought back fearlessly.
The Ukrainian connected an amazing five-punch combination in round nine, but a powerful left hook from Lopez stopped him from progressing.
The round ten belonged to Loma, but the unforgiven Lopez would always fought back in his own style which proved to be difficult for Loma to neutralize.
Having watched Lomachenko dictate the pace in round 11, the young but talented Lopez fired punch after punch in the final round to make sure that the contest was his as he fired punch after punch to unsettle Vasiliy Lomachenko.
In the end, the judges scored the bout 116-112, 119-109, and 117-111 in favour of Lopez.
“I have to thank God, “said Lopez. “I’m thankful, and grateful. It’s time for the new generation to take over.”
