AFCON 2019 is days away and ahead of the tournament, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have settled down in Ismailia, Egypt to kick-off of final leg of preparations for 32nd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019.
According to Super Eagles official Twitter handle, the three-time African champions landed the North African nation on Monday, June 10, in high spirit, with 11 days to the commencement of hostilities at the biennial championship.
Before jetting off on Sunday, June 9, Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr dropped the pair of Kelechi Iheanacho and Seyi Ajayi from the final 23-man squad.
Interestingly, the Super Eagles traveled alongside their Zimbabwean counterparts aboard a chartered MAX Air flight from Asaba after their friendly on Saturday, June 8.
The aircraft has a brief stopover at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, before hitting “The City of Beauty and Enchantment” as Ismailia is fondly called.
The Eagles delegation are camping at the prestigious Hotel Mercure in Ismailia, where they will spend seven days before heading to Alexandria, venue of their Group B matches during the tournament.
On Sunday, June 16, the Eagles will square up against Senegal’s Teranga Lions in their last pre-AFCON friendly in Ismailia.
The Eagles squad is captained by John Obi Mikel, who is staging a comeback to the national team since the last summer’s FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, but was on top of his game during Saturday’s friendly with Zimbabwe’s Warriors in Asaba.
Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980, 1994, and 2013, and with a young and ambitious squad that already experienced highest-level competition steam at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, should be one of the teams to watch out in Egypt.
