Anthony Mundine has declared George Kambosos “the greatest boxer Australia has produced” after his upset win against Teofimo Lopez on Sunday.

Kambosos sent shockwaves through the boxing world with the split-decision defeat of Lopez, who entered the bout as the overwhelming favourite.

With his win, Kambosos earned the WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring lightweight titles and declared himself “the greatest fighter in Australian history” in its aftermath.

Now, the 28-year-old’s bold claim has been backed by Mundine, who said he was “proud” of Kambosos’ achievement.

The former WBA world super middlweight titleholder couldn’t resist taking the opportunity to big-note himself at the same time as singing Kambosos’ praises.

“From the greatest sportsman’s Australia has produced to the greatest boxer Australia has produced congratulations my man enjoy the moment no one can take it away from you. Proud of you!!!!!,” Mundine wrote on Facebook.

Sunday’s fight at Madison Square Garden was Lopez’s first since defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko in Las Vegas over a year ago.

Kambosos hadn’t stepped into the ring for a professional bout since last year either when he beat Lee Selby by split decision on Halloween.

But the Aussie kept his undefeated record intact over the weekend, coming out firing to completely dispel predictions of a Lopez first-round knockout.

The end result may have come as a surprise to boxing pundits, but Kambosos said it was just another day at the office.

“Did I change all week? Have I changed my whole career? Never,” he said.

“I believe in myself, I back myself. I said it time after time, you may not believe it but I believe in myself and look at me now, I’ve got all the jewels.”
