Global energy giant, ENGIE-the latest partner of the Paris2024 Olympic Games campaign has stated that they are proud to support an Olympic Games project that respects the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement.

ENGIE thus joins the ranks of earth conscious global organizations vowing to keep fighting global warming after Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Accord. This is in consonance with French President, Emmanuel Macron’s call for the world to make our planet great again speech, after the US withdrawal.

Paris2024 announced the world leading innovator in clean energy company, ENGIE as its latest partner, 100 days ahead of the host city decision slated for September, 13 in Lima, Peru. ENGIE is the 20th company and the 16th official partner to join the Paris 2024 Olympic Games bid. The theme of the partnership is “Sharing the Energy Revolution”- a concept in line with the company’s commitment to energy transition.

Part of ENGIE’s research and development site, wedged between the Stade de France and the proposed Athletes’ Village in Seine-Saint-Denis will be used for the construction of the Aquatic Centre-the only sporting facility on the drawing board if the September host city decision favours the Parisian bid.

The head honcho of ENGIE, Isabelle Kocher indicated at the event to formalize their relationship with Paris 2024 organizers that: “It’s a pleasure for ENGIE to formalize its partnership with Paris2024. We share the ambition of environmental excellence and sustainable development on the Paris Seine Saint-Denis area.” The company’s commitment to energy transition can be seen in the fact that: in 2016, ENGIE realized more than 66 billion Euros of turnover. Besides they invest 1.5billion Euros yearly in the development and innovation of solar technologies in support of a low carbon economy.

To that effect, Co-Chair of Paris2024, Tony Estanguet commended ENGIE for coming on board as the newest partner of Paris2024. “The arrival of a world leading company and innovator in clean energy to our side further strengthens our ambitions for the most sustainable games in the history of the Olympic movement.” Tony intimated.

Sustainability has become the cornerstone of the Paris2024 project since its inception, in keeping with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Agenda 2020 vision.

For this reason, Paris2024 has decided to partner public, private and major players to be able to stage the greenest Olympic Games ever. Paris 2024 is the first bid committee to be awarded ISO20121 certification. So, organizers aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the Games by 55% after London2012 and more recently Rio2016.
The Paris Climate Agreement (French: Accord de Paris) sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 degree Celsius.
