The national Goalball team [male and femal] has began camping ahead of their 2020 IBSA Goalball African Championships qualifier for Tokyo slated for Port Said, Egypt from February 28 to March 06.
This is the last qualifier for Tokyo 2020 and Ghana is expected to compete against countries such as Nigeria, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt amongst others.
Ghana’s team is making its first appearance at the Para qualifiers after taking part in the African Championship in Kenya 2013 where team Ghana placed fifth. The female team was also at the world championship in South Korea in 2015, placing 7th out of the 12 countries that participated.
Ghana has failed to appear at qualifiers due to financial constrains confronting the Ghana Blind Sports Association. With one male and one female slot up for grabs, the competition is expected to be hot.
But Ghana teams, both male and female has the potential to make the qualification to the Paralympics games in Tokyo.
Ghana recently as part of preparation defeated South Africa in an international friendly in Cape Coast last November.
The contingent is expected to depart Ghana on Friday, February 28 for all this important competition.
The Ghana Blind Sports Association is the sole body mandated to develop blind sports including Blind Football, Judo, Tandem Cycling, Showdown and others.
