Malian defender – Ousmane Diallo has said that the Eagles are eyeing victory in their modern day David vs Goliath matchup against Mauritania at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran this evening in order to save their supporters from going into any football calculations.
“We don’t want to go into mathematics. We want to be focused from the start of the game to the end,” the defender revealed.
“We want to win the game. We want to achieve this for our fans back home who continue to give us a lot of support.”
Diallo applauded the millions of supporters back home who have stood behind the team while adding that they have a great deal of respect for their opponent.
“I want to thank the people in Mali who are cheering for us.
“In this tournament, there are no small teams. We are determined to win, and we know that the opponents are good, but we shall try to win.”
The two sides last faced each other in September 2019 in the CHAN 2020 Qualifiers.
In the first leg in Nouakchott, they settled for a goalless draw, but Mali defeated Mauritania 2-0 in the return leg in Bamako to progress to the tournament that was played in 2021 in Cameroon with Mali reaching the final against eventual winners Morocco.
