Veteran goalkeeper Nelson Lukong literally bailed out his side AS Vita, as they played to a 0-0 draw with Togolese side ASC Kara in a tightly contested Total CAF Champions League first round, first leg tie in Lome on Sunday.

Lukong, who turns 39 next month, made three brilliant stops in the match including one from a last minute free-kick, stretching his strong right arm to the bottom right corner to pick out a well curled shot.

The shot-stopper had made another save earlier in the game, forcing another free-kick against the crossbar in the second half before making another important block one on one.

Vita played second fiddle in the match with the home side pulling all the strings, but still managed to get a few shots at goal. Toure Amed volleyed over from Djuma Shabani’s corner three minutes after the restart while in the opening half, Marcel Mapumba’s brilliant shot from close to 40 yards out off a poorly defended corner flew straight into the keeper’s arms.

Heading into the return tie in Kinshasa, Vital will hope to improve their finishing to earn a ticket into the group stages.
