Yes! the odds favorite – Emanuel Navarrete Martínez retained his WBO featherweight title on Friday night against Joet De Jesus Gonzalez at the Pechanga Arena San Diego, California but the Mexican knockout artist had to dig very deep into his gloves to snatch that all deserving unanimous decision win.
Like Navarrete predicted prior to fight night, Joet Gonzalez came into the ring with a fearless heart and threw everything at El Vaquero, but the two-weight division champion [Navarrete] who defended his junior featherweight crown five times before vacating to claim the featherweight title proved why he is one of the few go-to men in modern day boxing having opened cuts beneath and above Gonzalez’ right eyes and punishing him throughout the rounds via that channel.
Despite fighting with swollen eyes, Joet Gonzalez still manage to win some rounds in that bloody featherweight bout.
At the end of an exciting 12-round contest, the three judges – Max DeLuca, Patricia Morse Jarman and Pat Russell scored the bout; 110, 116-112, 116-112 in favor of Emanuel Navarrete.
“Without a doubt, I hurt him, but every single time he came back, and he also hurt me. A couple shots he landed hurt me during the fight,” Navarrete said in a post fight interview.
“It has been an exciting ride so far, and from now on, I want the bigger fights.”
Emanuel Navarrete threw a total of 979 punches, including 104 in the 12th round to close the show in style.
Meanwhile Joet Gonzalez expressed shock at the final verdict, believing that he won most of the rounds:
“I thought I had it seven rounds to five, eight rounds to four.
“I was really surprised by that score of 118-110, I believe. But it is what it is, and I did my best.”
