From a humble beginning, 17-year-old sprinter from Ibeno, Akwa Ibom, – Imaobong Nse Uko rose to an instant stardom on Saturday, August 21 having won gold medal for Nigeria in the women’s 400m final at the 2021 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

Nse Uko who became the Nigeria National Sports Festival [NSF] Champion in the 400 metres finished the race in a Personal Best of 51.55 seconds, ahead of Kornelia Lesiewicz of Poland [51.97], and Sylvia Chelangat of Kenya in 52.23 seconds.

The Apostolic Church Secondary School graduate has become the fourth Nigerian woman to win the U-20 gold after Fatimah Yusuf in 1990 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and Olabisi Afolabi in Lisbon, Portugal in 1994.

She also combined with Opeyemi Deborah Oke, Ella Unojuvwevwo, and Favour Ofili to win another gold for Nigeria in the 4x400m event.
