The COVID crisis has hit the Swiss media in a very hard way. Short-time work, fewer sports pages, budget cuts and the first announcements of redundancies, such as at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung NZZ, are the first dramatic consequences. Freelance journalists cannot report on any events and their existence is threatened.

The affected persons receive compensation for loss of earnings from the state, but this help expired at the end of May. Politicians will not debate further support until autumn. That will be too late for a lot of journalists.

As a further measure, the state finances the basic text service of the national news agency Keystone-SDA and makes it available to the media free of charge during the crisis. In addition, newspapers and magazines will be delivered free of charge by the Swiss Postal Services.
