All is set for the Garden City to host its share of the community armwrestling championships geared towards scouting for talents to represent Ghana at the upcoming Africa Armwrestling Championship.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in partnership with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) would host ‘wannabe’ armwrestlers from the northern sector of the country at the Heroes Park tomorrow.
According to a member of the technical team of the federation, Nii Otoo Larkyne, the event would attract athletes from the Upper East and West, Northern, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti Regions.
He explained that selected athletes by the technical department of the federation would join their fellows from the southern sector to compete at the national championships to be held early next month.
He added that after the national championship, selected athletes would form the nucleus of the national armwrestling team, Golden Arms to represent the country at the Africa Championship.
They again had the Asempa FM community armwrestling championship held at the premises of Multimedia Group Limited (MGL) to serve as the southern sector championship.
On his part, the GAF President, Charles Osei Asibey mentioned that although there are tough times ahead of welcoming Africa to Accra, they took the challenge to host the event because they wanted to encourage participation by Ghanaians and Africans while enhancing local and technical development of the sport.
He said it was also to prevent a situation where Ghana cannot travel to better the success chalked in Nigeria in the event where the host went to a different country and added that it was also to promote and popularize armwrestling across the country.
He noted that Ghana’s hosting of the event is also to promote tourism and affirm Ghana’s hospitality to Africa and the World and attract corporate Ghana to invest in the sport.
This weekend’s event is sponsored K-Balm ointment from Kofikrom Pharmacy and GOTV
