Jamel William Herring’s dream of defending his WBO junior lightweight title against Jonathan Oquendo this evening in Las Vegas has been called off after the American champion [Herring] tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time under a month.

Herring, otherwise known as Semper Fi first tested positive on June 22 after exhibiting symptoms and then tested negative on July 3 which paved the way for the fight to be rescheduled to Tuesday, July 14. But the American champion was surprised on Monday morning when it was announced that he has tested positive again.

“I’m extremely disappointed that I’m not going to be able to fight tomorrow night,” he said.

“As I’ve shared previously, I tested positive for COVID-19 on June 22 after exhibiting symptoms.

“I quarantined and recovered as directed by my doctor. I then retested on July 3 and my test was negative, so this result is a complete surprise. I was fully prepared to make my second title defense tomorrow night.

“I am hoping that my team and Top Rank can reschedule this fight soon. Thank you for all the support everyone has shown. I can’t wait to get back in the ring and perform.”

Herring revealed this morning via his twitter handle that his antibody test results is encouraging and he is hoping to come back soon.

“The moment I leave the MGM Grand, my antibody test results come back Face with tears of joy,” he tweeted.

“I can’t win! It’s good to at least know I have the antibody in my system, that helps fight the virus now,” he adds.

The preliminary bout between featherweights – Luis Melendez and Eddie Vazquez was also cancelled following a positive test result for Melendez.
