The statue of two-time Olympic champion Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce has arrived in the island and is set to be unveiled later this year once the track season ends.
The announcement was made by Jamaica’s Minister of Sports Olivia Grange on Tuesday.
The minister was speaking at the launch of the JAAA/SVL Junior and Senior National Championships at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston.
In October 2016, the minister had commissioned that statues of Jamaican athletic stars – Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Asafa Powell – as recognition of their contribution to the sport and country. An eight-foot statue of Bolt was unveiled in December 2017 and it seems that Fraser-Pryce will be next.
“But we are not going to unveil the statue immediately. We are going to unveil the maquette, a preview of what the statue looks like. The statue will be unveiled later this year. The maquette will be unveiled, particularly to the media later this month.
“Shelly-Ann has given it her approval. She came, she looked at it and she is very happy.”
In addition to her two Olympic 100-metre titles, Fraser-Pryce is also a seven-time world champion and holds the national record of 10.70 in the 100m. She shares the record with Elaine Thompson. Both are tied as the fourth fastest women in history.
