Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan insists he is still the General captain of the senior national team until coach C.K Akonnor decides otherwise.

Asamoah Gyan was named the General captain of the Black Stars by coach Kwasi Appiah on the road to the AFCON,2019 African Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt as the coach promoted Andre Ayew to lead the four-time African champions.

This decision did not go down well with Asamoah Gyan who saw it then as disrespect to his person being the senior member of the team.

In view of that, the prolific goal scorer announced his retirement from the team abruptly until President Nana Akufo-Addo called on him to rescind his decision which he gladly did, but he was an unused substitute throughout the tournament.

Meanwhile, speaking in an interview on Adom TV this morning the former Sunderland striker said since the new coach [C.K Akonnor] has not taken the title from him he still sees himself as the General captain until further notice.

“Yes, I read that the coach has named his captain and assistants of the team but I did not hear him announce a new General captain so I still see myself as the one with that particular title,” Gyan told Myxtro.

Though club-less, Gyan insist he still has a lot of football in him to contribute to the course of the Black Stars but he would like to be active first before accepting any call up.
