Bongokuhle Hlongwane late goal was enough for Bafana Bafana to snatch a crucial 1-0 win over the Black Stars at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg [South Africa] on Monday to go atop Group G in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ qualifiers.

The game which was all, but a true midfield battle saw the two sides exhibit physicality in the middle as the referee tried to allow the match flow with little interruptions. The Black Stars created the first opening in the 10th minute as Andre Ayew found Joel Fameyeh down the right channel, but the striker was fouled immediately by De Reuck to prevent him from causing any havoc.

South Africa came close in the 30th minute when goalkeeper Richard Ofori pushed away Teboho Mokoena’s curled free-kick into the path of Mothobi Mvala, but the midfielder disappointingly skied the ball over the angle for a welcoming goal kick.

Percy Tau broke the deadlock for Bafana Bafana in the 37th minute having ghosted his way into the eighteen yard box to head home Nyiko Mobbie’s cross but his celebration was cut short as the referee controversially ruled his effort offside.

Group G standings

Coach Hugo Broos side came knocking at the doors of the Black Stars in the 47th minute when Mokoena’s low cross into the box slipped through the legs of Richard Ofori into the path of Evidence Makgopa, but the Baroka FC striker strangely could not direct the ball into the yawning net.

Bafana came close again in the 68th minute, but Mothobi Mvala’s overhead kick narrowly missed the target.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane, however, hit the back of the net in the 83rd minute having tapped in Teboho Mokoena’s low cross from the right channel into the net.

South Africa have moved to the top of group G with 4 points, followed by the Black Stars on 3 points.
