The Socceroos potentially needed all the luck they could get against les blues, but they didn’t get it in the 82nd minute.
With the score locked at 1-apiece after a dramatic five minutes saw two penalties and subsequent goals from either side, the French went on the attack.
Paul Pogba strode forward, and with some nifty lead-up work with his teammates, got to the box.
He looked to dip the ball over goalkeeper Matt Ryan, and while it may have taken a deflection of an Aussie defender, the ball dropped in.
Technology was required to confirm the goal, however, clearly it went over the line.
In the end, that lucky goal was the difference in the two sides as our brave Socceroos went down 2-1.
The Aussies had their chances, and supporters with lament the controversial first penalty that lead to Antoine Griezmann’s first goal.
Australia was rewarded less than five mintues after Griezmann’s successful spot kick, with Socceroos skipper Mike Jedinak converted his own penalty chance.
French centre back Samuel Umtiti handled the ball from an Aaron Mooy free kick, and the captain, who wasn’t guaranteed a starting spot, did the rest.
