A lone goal from Bernard Morrison was enough for the Tanzania record champions’ Young Africans ‘Yanga’ to beat eternal rivals Simba in the Dar derby on Sunday at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam.
Ghanaian Morrison scored from a free-kick few meters outside the box after he was fouled just before the break. Personalities who attended the game included Tanzania President, John Magufuli and CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad among others.
Simba started the game on high, creating two chances in the opening ten minutes but efforts from midfielder Cletus Chama and striker John Bocco ended in vain.
Yanga responded only once in the similar time. Morrison failed to break the deadlock in the 11th minute after good build up with Ditram Nchimbi inside the box, before the latter missed two more chances before the quarter hour mark.
Yanga goalie, Metacha Mnata was superb in the half hour mark, denies Simba two clear chances in the box, leaving Chama and Mozambique import, Luis Miquissone surprised.
Simba’s leading scorer, Meddie Kagere hit the post five minutes before the break and four minutes later, Morrison scored the match winner from a free kick that left Simba goalie, Aishi Manula with nothing to do.
Yanga were dealt a huge blow after Morrison was injured just ten minutes after the break and replaced by Rwanda import, Patrick Sibomana.
Substitute Sibomana and Nchimbi had chances to double the lead for Yanga on the hour mark, but Simba goalie Manula saved the day and help his side to remain in contention.
Yanga goalie, Mnata was the hero of his side, as he surprised everyone two minutes from time, denying Simba forward, Deo Kanda from close range.
Morrison had this to say in the post match interview:
“First of all I thank God, all the fans and everyone who turned out to support us today.
“It was my first experience of the derby and I am happy that we won. It was not an easy goal.
“I focused at the positioning of Simba goalkeeper and gave a good shot. It was a nice game.”
