Senegal’s Generation Foot chalked a remarkable victory over five-time Africa champions and Egyptian giants Zamalek 2-1 on Saturday as both sides clashed in Dakar in the first leg of the Total CAF Champions League Round of 16.

Lima Gueye gave the Senegalese an early lead after 11 minutes, before completing his brace at the 70th minute to give Generation Foot a 2-0 lead. But substitute Mustafa Mohamed reduced the deficit for the White Knights five minutes later.

Zamalek now needs a win at the return leg in a fortnight in Egypt to reach he group stage, while Generation Foot will look forward to achieve a historical feat if they could hold their nerves and eliminated the CAF Confederation Cup title holders.

Gueye made use of poor marking from Zamalek defense to give the hosts an early lead after 11 minutes. The hosts tried to double their lead before the break but the first half ended seeing them having a 1-0 lead.

Lima completed his brace when he intercepted a poor backpass from Zamalek’s defender Mohamed Abdelghany to make it 2-0 for Generation Foot 20 minutes from time.

But the hosts’ joy was cut short when substitute Mohamed headed home from a corner kick just five minutes later.
The second leg is scheduled in Cairo in a fortnight with the aggregate winner reaching the lucrative group stage.
