Edson Alvarez’s goal in time added on gave Mexico their first win over Vanuatu in the opening day of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea.

The debutants [Vanuatu] had almost settled for a draw until a sloppy defending gave Alvarez enough space to shoot El Tri [Mexico] to a 3-2 win at the Jeonju World Cup stadium.

Two goals from Magana [10m], and Cisneros Ronaldo [25m] gave Mexico the lead, but Vanuatu returned from the recess doing all the attacking and scored two goals with ten minutes [52nd, 62nd] through Kalo and Wilkins Ronaldo.

Uriel Antuna nearly gave the debutants the winner later but his shot smashed the crossbar.

The moment of truth came in the 94th minute when the vulnerability of the Oceania side came into play, allowing Edson Alvarez space and time to give Mexico the winner.

Line-ups:

Vanuatu: Alick, Vatu, Philip, Thomas, Aruel, Ollie, W. Ronaldo, Kalo, Tenene, Patrick, Wohale.

Mexico: Romero, Cortes, Alvarez, Mayorga, Cervantes, Antuna, Lopez, Ronaldo Cisneros, Magana, Venegas, Yrizar.
