Europe’s top junior athletes will go for gold in Grosseto over the next four days as the European U20 Championships returns to Italy from July 20-23.
The now four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah and British javelin record-holder Goldie Sayers were among the medallists when the event was last held in Grosseto, in 2001, and many British athletes will be among those hoping to follow in their footsteps.
Sprint hurdler Alicia Barrett, hammer thrower Jake Norris, sprinters Rechmial Miller and Jona Efoloko, middle-distance runner Amelia Quirk and pole vaulter Molly Caudery are among those on the British team, which can be found listed here.
Having won 17 (2015) and 19 (2013) medals at the previous two editions of the championships, the team will once again look to top the medal table.
“Two years ago the British team outdid themselves in Eskilstuna, with a number of those athletes already making the step up to the senior team in just two years,” said Jo Summers, British Athletics’ team manager for the championships.
“The class of 2015 certainly set the bar high, but we’ll hopefully we’ll see a similarly successful championship in Grosseto.”
Among other athletes in action are Norway’s 16-year-old Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who has said he intends to race three events – the 1500m, 5000m and 3000m steeplechase – at the championships, plus Italian sprint hurdler Elisa Maria Di Lazzaro and Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis.
