Reigning Olympic sprint double champion Elaine Thompson has offered words of encouragement to up and coming sprint sensation Briana Williams who recently accomplished a sprint double of her own.
The 16-year-old Williams captured the attention of track and field fans around the globe with a sensational performance in Tampere, Finland over the weekend. The young Jamaican completed the IAAF World U-20 Championships sprint double in fine style on Saturday after clocking a personal best and championship record 22.50. Williams earlier clocked 11.16 to seize the 100m title ahead of American favourite Twanisha Terry.
Thompson, who captured a sprint double in similarly impressive fashion at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was among the young Jamaican’s admirers and was quick to offer words of encouragement.
“I watched her run. It’s awesome for a 16-year-old to actually capture the double at the U-20. I actually ‘dmed’ her on her Instagram page and I told her awesome work, to keep up the good work and she was so excited,” Thompson said in an interview with Nuffin’ Long Athletics.
“I want to continue to wish the best for her. We have so many talented athletes in Jamaica I want to hope for the best for them and for the future,” she added.
