Olympic champion Ryan Crouser led a US one-two in the men’s shot put at the Monaco Diamond League on Friday as China’s Lijiao Gong wrapped up a dominant victory in the women’s event.
Crouser went out to 22.05 metres on his fourth effort as seven athletes went beyond 21.20m for the first time ever.
Darrell Hill finished second, his 21.72m put edging out Brazil’s Darlan Romani (21.70) in a shot put event held at Monaco’s main port a day ahead of Friday’s meet at the neighbouring Stade Louis II.
In the women’s competition, reigning world champion Gong claimed victory with a best of 20.31m.
American Raven Saunders was second (19.67m) with Germany’s Christina Schwanitz (19.51) rounding out the podium, just ahead of Kiwi Valerie Adams, the four-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist.
