That is 1:49 pace for 800m and is the first time the South African has attacked a race from the off, so much so that the pacemaker never even made the front.

Behind the world and Olympic 800m champion, Ajee Wilson was also inside the old best mark with a US record 1:22.39.

Dina Asher-Smith defeated double world silver medallist Marie-Josee Ta Lou in the 200m, 22.41 to 22.44.

Julian Forte easily won the 100m in 9.99 with Adam Gemili third in 10.10.

Konstanze Klosterhalfen improved her 1500m PB and German under-23 record to 3:58.92 and there was a huge PB for Eilish McColgan (4:01.60) which moves her 13th all-time in the UK, just 0.22 behind her mother Liz’s time set 30 years ago.

Shara Proctor was third in the long jump with 6.62m and Andrew Butchart fourth in the 5000m in 13:12.73.

Desiree Henry was third in the 100m in 11.26.

Aries Merritt won the 110m hurdles in 13.17, while his fellow American Christina Manning clocked a 12.54 PB to win the 100m hurdles.
