No boxers should be more upset about the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight than Canelo Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.
The two boxers are set to face off for the true fight of the year on Sept. 16 in Las Vegas. Just everyone is talking about McGregor vs. Mayweather, which is happening three weeks earlier.
Even Canelo is getting in on the conversation.
While McGregor has almost no chance of handing the 49-0 Mayweather the first defeat of his career, Canelo was asked what he would do if the UFC star somehow beat Mayweather. That’s a huge “if,” but Canelo answered the question nonetheless. It might lead to a Canelo-McGregor bout.
The middleweight boxing champion said via FanSided:
“If that miracle was to happen, then we have a conversation. If that miracle were to happen, but I doubt it very much that Conor beats Floyd.”
Canelo is right. McGregor won’t beat Mayweather. He’s a UFC star going up against a legendary boxer. It would be in “Miracle on Ice” territory if McGregor were to win the fight.
And sure, there would be plenty of money to be made for both Canelo and McGregor, so of course he wasn’t going to dismiss the matchup three weeks before the first fight even happens.
But as Canelo basically said, he’ll wait for a McGregor win to actually happen before giving that fight any serious thought.
