Le Messager Ngozi have been crowned champions of Burundi, the only African country to continue playing football despite the coronavirus pandemic scare and spread on the continent.

They defeated visiting Inter Star 3-0 at the Stade Urukundo in Mwumba on Saturday to take an unassailable five-point lead.

Their only title rivals Musongati, who were held to 1-1 draw to Kayanza United. Ngozi and Musongati were tied neck-to-neck when the league resumed after a month’s break, but the former ensured they kept their pace, winning three of their last five games while Musongati only won once.

Explaining why the league was not canceled, The Burundi Football Association President, Ndikuriyo Reverien said:

“There was no reason to halt the league when other activities in the country were continuing as usual.”

Ngozi, who won the league for a first time two seasons ago, have 61 points from 29 matches with one round to play and qualify for the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League.
