Apart from astroturfing the old grassless pitch of his Alma mater – Accra Academy, the captain of the Ghana Black Stars [Asamoah Gyan] also provided flood lights to make the facility accessible at night as well.

The ‘Baby Jet’ was part of the Accra Academy school team that participated in the VALCO tournament in the year 2000. Asamoah Gyan’s sterling performance in the tournament earned him a call up into the then national academicals football team.

Through the guidance of his elder brother Baffour Gyan, the leading all-time African top scorer at the FIFA World Cup [Asamoah Gyan] was successful in colts football through to Liberty Professionals where he began his professional football career.

The Gyan Sports Centre is a benevolent gift to the school that gave the Baby Jet the opportunity to express himself on the field at the grassroot level.

One other great sports personality who graduated from Accra Academy Senior High School besides Asamoah Gyan is former Ghana sprint King, Leo Myles-Mills, who became the first Ghanaian to break the 10-second barrier in the men’s hundred meters with a personal best of 9.98 seconds.
