Ayo Akinola came off the bench to punish the Black Starlets of Ghana in their second Group A match of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on Monday, October 09, 2017.

The Stars and Stripes [USA] took an early control of the game as Blaine Ferri, Chris Durkin, and Andrew Carleton were all given free room to operate in the midfield but the Black Starlets despite looking jittery managed to neutralize Joshua Sargent making it difficult for the United States to freely enter into the box.

Blaine Ferri however, came close in the 27th minute from a well measure free kick outside the goal area which went half an inch from the target.

The Starlets came into the picture from half the hour mark and got their first chance in the 35th minute, but goalkeeper Garces managed to block Ibrahim Sadiq’s attempt as he whips the ball in from the left.

Eric Ayiah went through the central defensive pair of the United States in the 39th minute, beat goalkeeper Garces on the road only to lose his footing in the process as Gloster returned to clear his lines.

Coach Paa Kwesi Fabin’s [Black Starlets] side returned from the break with a renewed energy except that the attackers failed to keep their composure in front of goal.

Ghana created three successive goal scoring opportunities in the 47th, 52nd, and the 53rd minutes, but Sadiq Ibrahim, Kudus Mohammed, and Emmanuel Toku were extremely profligate in the goal area as they kept shooting wide.

Coach John Hackworth’s side [USA] first chance in the second half came in the 65th minute, but Blaine Ferri ‘s shot went off target.

Sadiq Alhassan came close again in the 73rd minute, but he was forced to hit the side net under duress as two United States defenders closed him up quickly in the box.

Substitute, Ayo Akinola gave the Stars and Stripes the most expensive shot on the day as he whipped a delightful shot to goalkeeper Danlad’s far post in the 75th minute.

Chris Durkin picks a pass deep in the attacking third, releases it to Goslin for him to crew a short pass to catch Akinola on the run. Akinola cools the ball to pick the right spot and then slotted the ball into the net to give the USA two wins in two games.
