The American star is set to meet teenager Anastasia Potapova in Melbourne, where she is among the favorites again.

Williams is the 2017 Australian Open without a major title, but seems well placed to put an end to that expectation.

We look more closely at where Williams is before the first round.

Form and results

Williams didn’t have to wait another 2020 long. The 38-year-old has claimed the title at the Auckland Open for his first WTA Tour crown in 2017. And it was a spectacular run in New Zealand where he threw just one set. And also in the semi-final clash, they beat Amanda Anisimova 6-1 6-1.

First

Its first competitor, Potapova, comes in many different ways, starting with a pretty mixed start to 2020. The 18-year-old scored victories in both Brisbane and Adelaide but failed to win the main draw. Last year, Potapova reached the career high of 64 and defeated Angelic Kerber in the French Open. Surprisingly, he had never met Williams, and the form required a huge turnaround to make a shock.

Williams needs some time to get approved. Tamara Zidansek or wild card Han Na-be may be looking forward to the second round, and Wang Qiang could be her rival in the third.

What She said

“To win the final is just gratifying. In Auckland. It was really important to me, and I just want to build on it. It’s just a step to the next goal.
