The fourth seed won 6-4 6-4 and plays Estonia’s 28th seed Annette Conavit, who beat Migueline Iga Svyatek 6-7 (4) 7-5, 7-5 in Melbourne in the last eight.

Aleppo’s No. 1 World No. 1 Karolyn Wozniacki in the 2018 finals has not thrown a set in four meetings in Melbourne, and the Romanians seem absurd.

With his victory, the 28-year-old will rise from second to third.

“I had to rest because when I get a little nervous, I go crazy on the court, so I had to stay cool, get energy out of the box and play without looking back,” he said after some restless moments.

After Ashleigh Barty’s best seeds, Aleppo, last year’s Wimbledon champion and former winner of the French Open, is the only remaining seed in the lottery.

The second seeds, Carolina Pliskova, owner and third-generation Naomi Ossetian and history-seeker Serena Williams were among the top six seeds that lost in the third round.

A full-time coach and rate are “against”.

Aleppo beat Belgium’s Mertens in two of their previous three matches, including in the last 16 games of the French Open, in 2018, when he went on to win the title.

But Mertens won the last time they met when he came to the final in Doha last year.

Aleppo drew its first blood at the sunny Rod Laver Arena when it broke Mertens in the fourth point and consolidated 3-1.

The 24-year-old Mertens, whose best performance in the Grand Slam came to reach the 2018 Australian Open semifinals, broke back and then stubbornly went 4-3.

But Aleppo again beat 5-4 and converted the fourth set when Mertens turned the pattern.

The Romanian started the second set with the intention of crushing another early leader, but Mertens would not go quietly, breaking back as the pressure jammed.

The ninth game was pivotal as Aleppo finally got a break in the fifth inning before serving the match.
