Ghanaian hard-hitting boxer, Richard Oblitey Commey dispatched off Askhabovich Chaniev in a debilitating manner to become the new IBF lightweight champion of the world at the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas on Saturday, February 02, 2019.

The two boxers bounced off after the opening bell, going toe-to-toe as the Russian looked slightly dangerous having more of his right overhand punches going well for him, but Richard Commey kept his grounds and dropped him on the floor with one ferocious jab in the closing stages of Round 1.

Richard Commey [28-2, 25KO’s] went attacking right from the bell in Round 2 as he landed a farash of left-right combination to end the fight in just 39 seconds into the round.

Speaking in a post fight interview, a very happy looking Commey said winning the title means a lot to him:

“It means everything to me.

“Thank God I’ve been able to accomplish my dream [of winning a title].”

Commey [31], known for his great leg movement and hard punching power has lost twice since turning professional having lost [114-113], [115-122], [113-114] to Robert Easter in September 2016 in Pennsylvania. Few months later, Commey lost again via split decision [116-112], [115-113], [112-116] against Denis Shafikov in Moscow, Russia.

But the story was different on Saturday night as Commey became Ghana’s 9th world champion after; David Kotey, Alfred Kotey, Marvelous Nana Yaw Konadu, Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey, Joseph Agbeko, and Isaac Dogboe.

Richard Commey will now be ranked No. 3 in the lightweight division after Vasily Lomachenko and Mikey Garcia.
