The Sports Writers Association of Ghana [SWAG] launched the 45th edition of its yearly awards ceremony in Accra yesterday. The event is slated for May 25, 2020 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Running unbroken for 45 years, the SWAG awards do not only boast of being the longest running awards event in Ghana, but also fall into the category of the most prestigious and credible award scheme. This year’s edition will honour the nation’s most distinguished sportsmen and women who tilted the scales in 2019.

The President of the association, Kwabena Yeboah in his speech expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana for their continuous support towards the SWAG Awards. The President also intimated that for the first time in the history of the awards, five (5) sporting disciplines; athletics, rugby, weightlifting, armwrestling and badminton, categorized as the Best 5 Performing Sports, will each be honoured. Special recognition will also go to Distinctive Corporate Groups MTN, Ghana Gas, ABL and TT Brothers.

Another innovation to the awards scheme is the SWAG Sports Journalist of the Year. Just like Oliver Twist, the president Kwabena Yeboah called on the telecommunication giants MTN to specially adopt this category.

“Training of sports journalists is so dear to my administration as we seek to enhance their capacity,” the President of SWAG said.

“This award therefore is so dear to my heart and I would therefore humbly appeal to MTN, our title sponsors, to adopt this award and offer it special tributes,” he added.

For his part, Corporate Services Executive Samuel Koranteng who represented the telecommunication outfit admonished SWAG to use the scheme to continue to promote sports in the country while pledging digital support for the ceremony.
