The Super Falcons of Nigeria finally made it through to the finals of the Africa Women Cup of Nations [AWCON] hosted by Ghana.
However the team have not been too convincing especially in their last semi final clash with Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon. But despite losing to South Africa in their first group game, the Falcons can still overcome the Bayana Bayana team in the final on Saturday, December 1.
Here are four ways the Falcons can turn the result on Saturday in their favour:
1. They need to take the game to their opponents
In the first match against the South Africans, the Super Falcons only made one decent attempt on goal which Desire Oparanozie blasted over the post. The Nigerian side did not force a single save out of the Bayana Bayana goalkeeper all through the game which is unusual for a team defending the title. The girls should play a more tactical game and play like champions if they want to retain the title for the ninth time asking.
2. They have to create and take their chances
Just as in the game against Zambia and Equatorial Guinea, the Falcons need to be more enterprising in front of goal. Nigeria played badly in two other matches with South Africa and Cameroon which tested their resolve in build up play leading to their opponents’ goal.
Asisat Oshoala and Francisca Ordega are useful figures any day in building up the game from the midfield before delivering the final pass.
3. They should be wary of Thembi Kgatlana
Thembi Kgatlana is the revelation of the tournament and a strong contender for Africa Women’s Player of the Year. She has been instrumental all through the tournament including scoring the winning goal for Bayana Bayana in their first ever win over Nigeria.
The Nigerian defence should be cautious of her pace and precision in front of goal.
4. They should avoid being over-confident
Thomas Dennebery should warn his girls to avoid being too sure they are going to win the match without threading with caution. South Africa can be deadly in the on the counter attack and their pace have kept all opponents on their toes in the competition. Nigeria can win the match if they show character against Bayana Bayana because of experience and their long dominance in women football in Africa.
