Based on the current impact of COVID-19 pandemic on sports journalists all over the world, the situation in Ireland appears to be more generous than in the majority of European countries.
If a person is self-employed and their trading income has ceased (this will apply to freelance sports’ journalists). Those journalists aged between 18 and 66 will receive payment of €350 per week (€1,517 per month). In addition to that, other criteria are residency in the Republic of Ireland and lack of any employment income.
The payment was originally to continue until June 8, but this will be extended: Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Thursday, May 7 in the Parliament that “it will need to be extended beyond mid-June”.
