The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2021-22 kicked off officially on Friday with the opening two matches of the first preliminary round. Wins for Uganda’s Express FC and Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets against Sudan’s Al Merrikh and South Africa’s AmaZulu FC respectively.

Express FC [Uganda] 2 – 1 Al Merreikh [Sudan]

Eric Kambale found the opening for Express FC after 7 minutes. The Ugandans knew that a home victory will allow them to prepare calmly for the return leg scheduled in a week’s time.

Opposite, the Sudanese of Al Merreikh were not intending to let it go, so the equalizer came after 39 minutes by Bakri Al Madina.

In the second half and more precisely on the hour mark, the Ugandans regained the advantage through Martin Kizza. The score would no longer change.

Amazulu FC [South Africa] 0 – 1 Nyasa Big Bullets [Malawi]

The Malawians of Nyasa Big Bullets surprised Amazulu FC with a 1-0 victory in Durban.

The game played at Moses Mabhida Stadium counted towards the first leg of the first preliminary round of the TotalEnergies Champions League.

Chiukepo Msowoya scored the game’s only goal after 26 minutes. With five minutes to go into the first half-time, Big Bullets’ Yamikani Fodya got a red card and had to leave his team-mates outnumbered.

Despite their advantage, the South Africans failed to equalize and lost ahead of the return leg in Malawi.
