Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Selorm Adadevoh has explained the reason why the telecommunication giants have kept faith with the Sports Writers Association of Ghana [SWAG] in honoring deserving sports personalities.

Speaking at the 44th edition of the MTN SWAG awards ceremony at the Accra International Conference Center [AICC] on Saturday, May 11, Mr. Adadevoh eulogized the Sports Writers Association of Ghana for constantly celebrating excellence in sports.

“The theme for this year’s event ‘Celebrating Sports Excellence’ is a compelling one, particularly because it is important to honor and celebrate those that work so hard to promote the essence of sports in our lives,” he said.

“These unsung heroes have put Ghana on the international map and continue to be a source of inspiration to many young people in the country. Why we support SWAG,” he adds.

“Our continuous support for SWAG is a proof of the significance we at MTN place on the Country’s Sports heroes.”

Mr. Adadevoh further enumerated the significance of sports to the brand MTN:

“We have proven this in our relationship with Ghana sports over the years. At the MTN Group level we sponsored the 26TH African Cup of Nations (CAN 2008) which was hosted in Ghana.

“When Ghana’s FA Cup fell into a period of inactivity for nine years, MTN stepped in to help revive the historic club knockout competition with a three-year sponsorship deal worth US$3 million in 2010. Today, MTN is still the title sponsor of the MTN FA Cup and we eagerly await the resumption of the competition.

“Our involvement in club football extends to our sponsorship of Ghana’s two most illustrious clubs, Kumasi Asante Kotoko (Kum Apem a, Apem Beba) and Accra Hearts of Oak (Never say die). MTN recently renewed its sponsorship of Kotoko following the last 8 years of being the proud sponsor of the club. As part of this sponsorship we have renovated the training grounds of Kumasi Asante Kotoko at Adako Jachie with an investment of GHS 524,000.00.

“However, our interest goes beyond football or for the Americans in the room, soccer. We are also proud sponsors of Golf events all over the country and continue to explore new opportunities for partnerships especially in underfunded sports disciplines.

“As a matter of fact, I am pleased to announce that we have recently taken up the sponsorship of Skate Soccer, a sport that exhibits our core key values of Leadership and Innovation. It is truly inspiring to witness polio survivors rise above physical limitations to play football. We will soon launch our sponsorship of this sport organized by the International Federation of Skate Soccer.”

Mr. Adadevoh could not end his sermon without praying the SWAG to reward itself with the ‘longevity award,’ having been able to sustain the awards ceremony for over four [4] decades.

The 44th MTN-SWAG Awards [the longest running sports event in the country] was proudly sponsored by MTN Ghana with support from GOIL, Ghana Free Zones Board, Stanbic Bank, Data Bank, Special Ice Mineral Water, Exim Bank, TT Brothers and Twellium Industry.
