Santi Cazorla found the net twice as lowly Villarreal held Real Madrid.
The former Arsenal star has had a nightmare time with injuries in recent years but has got back in action back in Spain this season.
He was recalled to the starting line-up for Villarreal’s first match back after the winter break, with his side struggling in 18th in the La Liga table.
And it took him just four minutes to find the net with a stunning curled effort beyond Thibaut Courtois.
Talented teenager Samuel Chukwueze cut inside from the right and beat multiple defenders before finding Cazorla on the left of the box.
He let fly first time, whipping his effort across Courtois and into the bottom corner.
Real bounced back from their slow start though and were level within a matter of minutes.
A neat move involving Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal saw Lucas Vasquez sent clear down the right.
He picked out Karim Benzema in the middle and the Frenchman made no mistake.
Real were ahead on 20 minutes when Raphael Varane rose highest to head in a Toni Kroos free-kick.
They looked set to hold on for the win to close the gap on the top three.
But Cazorla would have the final say as he struck in the closing stages.
A fine cross from Pablo Fornals found the diminutive Spaniard at the back post and he made no mistake with his header.
