Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Alisson will miss the next ‘few weeks’ to injury after hurting his calf in the win over Norwich.
The goalkeeper was forced off during Liverpool’s opening Premier League fixture and underwent scans after the game.
Initial fears were that Alisson could miss as much as six weeks to the injury, but Klopp played down that possibility.
‘Not too cool. It’s a calf injury which takes him obviously out for a while,’ Klopp told the club website.
‘I don’t want to make now [an] exact prognosis on when he will be back but it will not be Wednesday for sure, so now then we have to see.
‘It takes a while, it takes a couple weeks for sure, and we have to see.
‘I saw already like “six weeks” and stuff like this, but Ali was not a lot injured in his career so I would like to wait a little bit to see how he develops in that process now, but he is not in for the next few weeks.’
Summer signing Adrian is now set to step up to replace Alisson during his recovery from injury.
The former West Ham stopper got an excellent reception from Anfield when came off the bench against Norwich and is set to start against Chelsea on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
Alisson has helped transform Liverpool into one of the best defences in the league after a £67million move from Roma last summer.
The 26-year-old won the Golden Glove in his debut season at Liverpool, but Virgil van Dijk has already backed Adrian to step up.
‘Alisson is a very important player for us and we don’t know what the damage is yet but we do know we’ll have to deal with it,’ Van Dijk said.
‘I didn’t get the chance to say very much to Adrian except “good luck” when he came on.
