2018 Commonwealth Games champion – Akani Simbine of South Africa claimed gold in the men’s 100m race of the 21st African Athletics Championships at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Nigeria on Thursday, August 2.

Akani [24yrs] crossed the finish line in a time of 10.23 seconds.

Ivory Coast’s Arthur Cisse came second [10.33 sec] while Simon Magakwe of South Africa finished third, clocking 10.35 seconds to win the bronze medal.

Born in Johannesburg, Akani Simbine shot to prominence when he coasted an unbelievable 9.99 seconds to win [men’s 100m] the first meet of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League in Doha.

In the men’s long jump event, world champion and world indoor champ – Luvo Manyonga of South Africa was overpowered by his fellow countryman, Ruswahl Samaai who won with 8.45m.

Manyonga settled for the silver medal having jumped 8.43 metres.

The African Athletics Championship in Nigeria takes place from August 1-5.
